Checkmate at St Alban’s Chess Club

It was checkmate when budding chess masters at St Alban’s Catholic Primary were given some strategic tips to improve their gameplay.

The members of our after-school Chess Club have been benefiting from the coaching of Michael Riding, who is an expert in the game.

“Michael Riding has worked closely with the club to introduce new techniques, tactics, and competitive play, helping pupils to progress rapidly, and deepen their understanding of the game,” explained our Headteacher, Mrs Yeoman.

“Through weekly sessions, children are developing key skills, such as problem solving, logical thinking, concentration, and resilience.

“Staff say the game has also helped pupils build confidence, learn to plan ahead, and cope positively with both winning and losing.”

Attracting a growing number of children, the club takes place every Tuesday after school, and is led by Year 5 Class Teacher Mrs Laverick.

“Chess has been a fantastic way to challenge our pupils and encourage them to think deeply,” she said. “The children are highly engaged, and it’s wonderful to see them supporting one another and discussing strategies.”

With attendance continuing to rise, St Alban’s hopes to expand the club further, and also plans to explore opportunities for the children to take part in competitions in the future.

“It’s inspiring to see how motivated the children are,” added Mrs Yeoman. “Chess supports academic learning while also developing patience, focus, and creativity.

“One particularly enthusiastic pupil has even taken his passion for chess a step further by using a 3D printer to design and create his own model chess set at home – a project that impressed both staff and fellow pupils.”
